The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers the opportunity for Doctoral Studies (Government Gazette 4884/12.10.2018).

Purpose

The doctoral studies of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the School of Engineering of the University of West Attica aim to promote knowledge and original scientific research and lead to the award of a PhD degree. The doctoral degree is an academic title, which certifies the completion of original scientific research and the substantial contribution of the holder to the development of science and knowledge in the respective scientific discipline.

The Doctoral Studies Programme (DSP) of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of West Attica is organised and operates in accordance with the provisions of Law no. 4485/2017 and the general institutional framework for doctoral studies of the Greek universities, as applicable.

To whom is the DSP addressed?

The right to apply to the Department’s DSP is open to graduates of higher education institutions (Universities or TEI) of Greece or of recognized as equivalent institutions of foreign countries who hold a Diploma of Postgraduate Studies (M.Sc.) of a higher education institution of Greece or recognized as equivalent institutions of foreign countries and the holders of a single and indivisible postgraduate degree according to article 46 of Law no. 4485/2017.

In exceptional cases, non-holders of a Master’s degree are also admitted to the DSP, provided that the applicant has either or both:

1. strong (published or not) research background on topics relevant to that proposed for his/her doctoral thesis, with proven knowledge, know-how and research ability at a substantial level.
2. a previous academic record that establishes excellent prospects for research work, e.g. a scholarship from a prestigious organisation, distinctions in international competitions (such as Physics or Mathematics or Computer Science Olympiads), awards, proven excellence in a field, very high performance in undergraduate studies. The above exceptions should be fully justified and documented in a written recommendation from a faculty member, who has been nominated to supervise the candidate’s doctoral thesis, or from the Selection Committee, which is responsible for evaluating the candidate’s records, or from anyone else who is in a position to guarantee the candidate’s performance and who has the authority of similar verification.
