DIPLOMA THESIS GUIDE

1. Assignment of Diploma Thesis

  • Students, after consultation with the proposed supervisor, submit an application for the assignment of a diploma thesis (or dissertation for the old Technological Institution course of studies) to the Department Secretariat at the beginning of every semester, and during a period of one (1) week* after the end of the online course application submission period. In this application form, the supervising professor indicates the three-member Examination Committee, with one of its members being the supervisor. Members of the Examination Committee can be members of the Faculty, members of other categories of teaching staff in accordance with applicable law, or researchers from other Departments or Research Centers of the same or relevant field with the subject of the thesis to be conducted.
  • Accordingly, the General Assembly of the Department approves the applications.
  • In order for students to be eligible for a diploma thesis assignment, they must be enrolled in the 10th semester of the course of studies, or be enrolled in a lower semester, but only if they have up to five (5) courses remaining to receive the Diploma.
  • The typical completion period is one academic semester. With the consent of the supervising professor, the completion period can be extended by one semester.
  • In exceptional cases, and upon a reasoned request of the student, the period for the completion of the work can be extended for another semester.
  • After the end of the three (3) semesters, the student must re-apply for the assignment of a diploma thesis / dissertation.
  • Students, can submit an appropriate request to the General Assembly of the Department, and request the change of subject or supervisor, but at most one time.

2. Procedure for submitting an application for Diploma Thesis examination

  • The examination-assessment of the thesis of the undergraduate students is only held after the end of the exam periods of February, June and September, and within the two (2) succeeding weeks*.
  • Up to one (1) week before the beginning of the two (2) week period of the thesis examination, after consultation with their supervising professor, students submit an application for the thesis examination to the Secretariat of the Department.
  • The supervising professor fills in the application the three members of the Examination Committee as well as the date and time of the examination. The student is responsible for submitting a copy of the thesis, in electronic and / or printed form to the examination committee, and in electronic form to the Secretariat.

3. Examination-assessment of the Diploma Thesis

The three members of the thesis Examination Committee attend the student’s presentation of the work conducted and ask questions, in order to shape an opinion on the correctness and completeness of the approach followed and the solution of the investigated problem, as well as on the degree of participation of each of the participants in the preparation of the work, in case where the dissertation is assigned to more than one student (the latter case is only possible for students who complete the older, Technological Institution program of studies). The three members of the Examination Committee evaluate and grade independently each of the participants in the student work group. The grade of the work for each of the students derives from the average grade of the members of the three-member Examination Committee. The supervising professor submits the examination report with the score of the Examination Committee members to the Secretariat of the Department.

In the case that the examination committee assess a diploma thesis / dissertation as incomplete, it is referred for further processing. In this case, the new presentation takes place on a date indicated by the three-member Examination Committee, after consultation with the student, at which time the examination procedure is repeated, as described in the above paragraphs of this article.

In the event that the scientific results of the diploma thesis / dissertation are patented, the current legislation applies to the holders of the rights deriving from it.

4. INSTITUTIONAL REPOSITORY (I.R.) “Polynoe”

Students must by themselves upload their work in the Institutional Repository (I.R.). Self-deposit is a prerequisite for obtaining the Diploma. The works, before being posted in the I.R., must bear the digital signature of the supervising professor and the members of the Examination Committee. They must also have been checked for plagiarism under the responsibility of the supervising professor using the special software available to the University.
After the title page, the main body of the dissertation, diploma or postgraduate thesis or doctoral dissertation must include the members of the Examination Committee and the relevant “Author Statement”. In the “Author Statement”, if the student has the consent of the supervising professor, he/she may explicitly state the restriction on access to the full text of his/her work for a certain period of time. With his/her digital signature, the supervising professor declares that the work has been evaluated and graded, as well as that he/she agrees with the time restriction on access to the full text of the work.

The policies of I.R. “Polynoe” and deposit instructions can be found at https://www.uniwa.gr/idrymatiko-apothetirio-polynoi/ and are also posted in the websites of the Campus Libraries.

It is clarified that I.R. “Polynoe” concerns the preservation of the works only of the students who attend the five-year study program of the Department and not of those who attend the Technological Institution program of studies.
